RELIGION. BOOM OR BUST?

Updated: Feb 2, 2020

By Nicolás Crespo

A couple of weeks ago I was asked this existencial question. “Are you willing to die for what you believe in?” Of course I would die for my faith. But many people don’t believe on a higher force than us. Some people often ask questions like “can you see God? Or “can you touch good?” The simple answer is no, I cannot, but can you see your brain, or touch your brain?

Religion nowadays is seen as old school, something of no interest, or something weird. The key to a fulfilling life is believing in something you love. In an article by Enotes I read a couple of days ago says that “this sense of belonging is essential for human wellbeing.” Also this “old school” thing that is called religion, bounds countries and societies together.

Of course I live in a country where the catholic religion plays a huge part, we go and help other people in not so perfect conditions in the name of God, in this events called “missions.” Yes, some of the missionaries only go to complete the hours of social service that are required to graduate, but believe me, at least half of those missionaries come back changed, in a positive way. This is because of a higher force that cannot be explained.

Living with beliefs that are not explainable is much more exciting. We have math, physics, chemistry, medicine, and we could go on for so long, but there is a reason that

all this exists. If you read the biographies of the founding fathers of a certain science, you will learn that they were highly devoted to a faith. Let’s take the example of Gregor Mendel, known as the founding father of modern science of genealogy. He was a priest! Did you know that? Maybe you didn’t, but now you have a new conversation starter.

All those sciences, that are the main reason many people don’t believe in something bigger, where created by that someone or something bigger.

A huge bonus of being religious is the moral and ethic values. For example, the roman catholic church, they have 10 commandments that if you break one, you sinned, and you had to go looking for a priest (a representative of the church with certain vows) and confess your sins, to be a better human. The value of religion is invaluable, you are taught from a young age to live a fulfilling life.

So, next time you are thinking of picking up a religious belief, or continue practicing you’re religion, sit down and think of it. Think about the pros and cons. It’s a big decision that will shape your life for good, for better.
